Listen. -- needs to be clarified.
Listen... to the voice which tells you what you can be, what you can do. Listen to the voice which explains how and when and why. Listen most of all to the voice which shows you the way in action, sacrifices, and accomplishments.
Do not listen to the voice which highlights your failures. Do not listen to the voice which applauds itself for its greatness. Do not listen to the voice which speaks the same tired semantics in the same scenarios, oblivious to its own demise.
Listening is harder when talking. Consider to whom you listen carefully. Consider the impact of your actions and inactions even more carefully.
2020 is the year where each of us plays a massive game of 52 card pickup with all of the things and people we take for granted. Some cards are lost, some are bent and broken and some of them are burned up in the fires of cancel/condemnation. Jokers wild doesn’t help much.
You choose whether you focus on what you can do... or what you can't do. Words have power. Are you so tired, so sore, or so sleepy... or are you focused on how you can be less tired, less sore... less sleepy. Be better. Don't seek affirmation for failing in others. Be inspired by achievements of others. Be more than you are. Choose what you tell yourself and others.
We live in a country where far too many are addicted to anxiety, fear, dependency, and victimization. Faith and choices focused on God and service to others is a proven therapeutic and it vaccinates and empowers US in community. We must choose to love and serve others above self. That will change everything. Peacefully.
Leading includes managing panic and optics and tone actively. Drawing a causal connection to more deaths because of Trump’s decisions and actions is ridiculous politics.
It is deplorable and naive to state that “Trump lied and people died.” The panic and fear kill and the ramifications of the humanitarian crisis are just beginning. Since we are now doing counterfactuals... in retrospect... if Hilary had been in charge things would have been very different and radically worse... such is the way of liars and losers and cowards. Trump is none of those things. With Biden it would have been far far worse. No closed borders in Feb and March is just as a start to how bad things could have been.
And to be clear, there is much we could have done better. But hindsight is 2020. Always has been... Actual leaders know this.
from Dave Foreman on FB
“so Donald Trump made some comments to Bob Woodward in March/April and now everyone is going nuts. Right.
I was doing a LOT of analysis back then on who said what when. The CDC, WHO, and government and private groups were desperately trying to make sense of things. EVERYONE was overreacting on too little factual information out of an abundance of caution. What was said one day was contradicted a week or a month later.
The president said in a short conversation that the virus was more deadly than the flu and also said he was downplaying it because he did not want to create a panic. THAT IS HIS JOB. Presidents are responsible for managing the mood of the country as the facts unfold.
Anyone who tries to act like they 'knew' what was happening is exaggerating. When you are shutting down air travel to other countries, contemplating the death of 2 million of your citizens, and don't really understand the disease yet because your medical team doesn't you say things to calm and sometimes manipulate the public. Remember that the people that want universal masks now were saying we didn't need then then - BECAUSE WE DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH PPE AND WANTED MEDICAL PEOPLE TO HAVE THE INVENTORY. We have tens of thousands of ventilators now that may never be used because we thought we needed them.
I get that if you want to defeat Trump in November or you can't stand the man ANYTHING will be a great reason to further your position. That does not, however, make it true. Various governors and Senators and Mayors said a lot of contradictory things around the same time. That is what panic does.“
If you have decided that you are right, but you no longer feel a need to listen to anyone else then in reality, YOU ARE WRONG.
Additionally, if you feel the need to demagogue and disparage others without any sense of civility, you are WRONG.
Being right is NOT enough. It never was, it never will be. This is a huge problem on the left and the right.
See something. Say something is wrong. This is correct:
SEE SOMETHING WRONG? Do something about it.
You. Yes you. Expecting someone else to handle it is the root of the problem. Need help, ask for it. PERIOD!!!
Raising a child to be happy and productive and to not take for granted all of the advantages provided them. How? My children benefit from my decisions and support but they make their own. If they become entitled and poorly educated with little understanding of where they come from then the fault lies with me as the elder and senior.
Blame and shame is pathetic and useless. The young and uninformed do not know. The obligation to model, share, and teach values and principles while upholding standards AND maintaining relationships is on the elder/parent/mentor. The apprentice journeyman must understand and embrace their role under the authority and experience of the elder but they must be left free to question and innovate. This balance is the essential spark of success.
When we choose to blame and shame, or claim credit and crow as we inevitably do we must remember the balance and dependency.
Failure brings a fault line just as success does. We must release the pressure a little at a time and manage the explosion of energy to capture and evolve.
How do you do what others say can’t be done? Hint: it doesn’t happen by hiding in fear or seeking to fit in.
1. decide to embrace your vision and path.
2. develop a platform of support. People, processes, tools.
3. Acquire capital. Money and knowledge.
4. begin small and then scale, adjusting all along the way. Prove, adapt and improve.
5. Seek more support and embrace your heart and mind. Execute the plan.
6. Celebrate and repeat.
Worry and anxiety kill. Faith, Hope, and Love sustains. Each of us chooses how to LIVE.
Focusing on how to not die each day is a mindset for victims and losers. Worst of all it spreads like a virus. I don’t understand the morbid attraction to suffering and victimization so prevalent in 2020. I speculate that it is perpetuated by #idiotsincharge to facilitate control and compliance.
Men, all men have many dreams and many failings.
Some rise and some fall. Many settle and stop seeking the highest places and examples because of their failures, real and perceived. Honor and authority flow to those who stand in the gap between rage and lunacy. The men of men lead and seek to avoid the weak place of cowards and fools.
Men of men no longer seek renown. Instead, men of men seek repose and respect.
Men have regrets. Men of men have many regrets. Repose and respect flow from regrets.
Age of service never ended. Only foolish inexperienced leaders treat their customers as commodities. Brand matters. Personal. Institutional. Vested people care. The volunteers in and organization are front line reps.
Distance is easier in the short term but deadly for long term. Relationships don’t survive in reality. Life goes on. As your choose your distance, you choose how your life progresses. Only you can decide how much relationship is required. This is further complicated by the reality that two way streets have different rules and expectations. As traffic increases, value increases.
CleverSnark is the currency of social media. Coupled with SmugSnark is it common and usually unattractive. It is entertaining and mean spirited all too often and the bite can hurt.
“In panic, we want to push the stick away from the spin, wrestle the plane out of it, but the trick is, as in everything, to go with the turning willingly, rather than fight it, give in, go with it, and that way come out of your tailspin whole.” -Edward Field, “Tailspin"
Communication in leadership is about achieving an outcome. If you spend majority of time trying to control drama and spin because of your lack of skill, you need to change something... maybe everything... channels are for attention but attention doesn’t equate to progress and success.
The outcomes are the goal... outcomes represent value. Communication and spin are only means to an end. Bad communication in leadership will lead to poor outcomes, division, and demagoguery.
What is the state of your communication?
Intersection of principles and practices...
